The vast amount of different soaps available can be super overwhelming. Glycerin, goats milk, CBD, melt and pour, artisanal – you name it, it exists.
I’ve never been a huge fan of heavily scented soaps and I always feel like I’m suffocating while washing my hands.
I can already feel my throat closing. Ugh.
As tempting as it may be to purchase expensive bars of handcrafted soap, why not handcraft it yourself? It’s not hard at all, and you can customize it to your heart’s desire. I believe you that the fancy paper wrapping taunting you in line at HomeSense, or to have a fun, colourful soap weighed out from Lush (a store I can’t even walk past) is tempting. But you also have to think about what additives are in those products if you’re making the transition to cleaner products.
Making your own soap (not from scratch because that’s a whole ordeal) gives you full control of what organic ingredients and the scents and benefits of essential oils you add in.
The selection of melt and pour soap bases can be endless, it just depends what you prefer. I love using goats milk, but if you’re vegan you can get olive oil or shea butter bases.
Time to play.
With combining organic matter and essential oils, keep in mind the synergy. You don’t want to mix Roman Chamomile essential oils with dried green tea leaves as those scents just don’t vibe well. You can refer to one of my older posts, “Scents and Purity, Start Taking Notes” to help make your own mixtures. A good rule of thumb is if your additions don’t smell good together, just don’t add it to the soap (because you’ll spend the next 2 months using a gross smelling soap or throw it out).
Also think about the area of the body you’ll be using it, and the job you want the soap to do (aside from cleansing, duh) and even the time of day.
Do you have drier skin in the winter? Use a shea butter base, with ground oatmeal, and a few drops of clove essential oil (mmm so cozy!).
Need something invigorating in the morning? Goat’s milk base, dried fine coffee grounds, and a few drops of patchouli and orange essential oils.
Truly, the combinations are endless.
You’ll need:
A silicone mold (specifically for formulating, you don’t need your muffins to taste like soap!)
Melt and pour soap base of your choosing
Preferred essential oils
Preferred organic matter
Weigh or break off the soap base that would roughly fit the mold of your choosing
Melt in a double broiler method
Once in liquid form, remove from heat source
Add enough essential oils to lightly smell them (the soap base mutes the scent so be careful not to add too much)
Add roughly 1 tsp of organic matter
Make sure the soap base isn’t too runny as the dried plant matter can float to the top despite the base having a suspending formulation to prevent that from happening (learn from my mistakes!)
Mix and pour into your mold, let cool and solidify, and remove from mold to use!
