You should absolutely use hand held balls meant for sports as a part of your self-care routine. Typically the most commonly used balls would be for tennis, lacrosse, and golf as these are the most versatile sizes for any part of your body that you need some extra love.
I always advocate using a lacrosse ball as it has the perfect rubber grip to use against a wall or the floor, as a tennis ball would be too soft and would slide instead of rolling (plus if you need deeper pressure, it’ll just crack open). A golf ball I only suggest to my patients that already use equipment for self-care, and have developed body awareness to use it safely. Golf balls are great to use if you’re having an episode of plantar fasciitis and need something to massage the nooks and crannies on the bottom of your feet. I’ve recommended even a marble once, but that’s next level.
Using a lacrosse ball is ideal for when you’re in a pinch and need some immediate relief, and you should definitely use it for maintenance in between therapy appointments. If you’re in a position that you don’t have workplace benefits and are unable to pay for therapy out of pocket, or you don’t have a lot of coverage, a lacrosse ball can be a God-send.
Don’t spend your money on a fancy lacrosse ball. You can find them at Sportchek, Homesense and Winners in their exercise sections, but don’t pay more than $6 because at that point your paying for a pretty colour and that has zero contribution to the function of the ball. Mark got me a couple blue ones you’ll see on social media because he knows it’s my favourite colour and you know, happy wife happy life bahaha.
You might come across balls that have more ‘give’ to them, or a different surface area or texture, but you can’t go wrong with CLA & NCAA certified balls. The quality is amazing.
And trust me, using it for your ass feels damn good.
