I’m going to share something personal that I find hilarious and it’s slightly embarrassing. Just over eleven years ago I met my husband during the second week of college and we hit it off. I guess some people could say love at first sight (one of them being me) and we were always together considering it was a private Massage Therapy school so the classmates you have – you have until the end (for the most part). His birthday is in mid-December and I wanted to impress him with a gift although we weren’t officially dating. So you know what this genius did? I got him a Jack LaLanne Power Juicer. Yes I did. I could only wish you were there to see the look on his face when taking off the wrapping paper (which he kept – so romantic) because he LOVED it. I was raving about it for weeks because my family had one and he’s never had one, and The Shopping Channel had it as a showstopper so it was only natural that that was going to be his present. I even gave my mother the cash to buy it as only a sensible eighteen year old wouldn’t have a VISA card.
So we went a bit crazy with juicing in the beginning with recipes found online and trial-and-error with home concoctions to figure out what we liked (literally the only vegetable we used were carrots). But then we stopped juicing, and came back to it years later for a couple of weeks, and again we fell off committing to it.
The biggest factor in all of this wasn’t deciding on which produce to use, or the task of chopping. It was because of how many parts there were to manage as most pieces weren’t dishwasher safe. The steel blade (looks like a guillotine) was only able to be unscrewed for washing using a ‘crescent’ tool. The filter in the juicer never seemed to truly get clean with all of the pulp buildup. The pulp collector itself was huge and took up space in the dishwasher. In addition to this, the nooks and crannies were so difficult to clean over time, so why bother use a machine we truly disliked using? So goodbye homemade goodness and hello $8 juices (I promise I only bought 4 in my lifetime).
When we gave our old juicer the boot, my husband decided to start researching a replacement (perfect for an upcoming Christmas present) that had the quality behind it, for an affordable price. I always say to never settle, and I’ve grown up being taught to spend the money for quality as you could spend more anyways replacing a sub-par product. You work hard for your money so spend the time to do it right!
So Christmas Eve came to exchange gifts after dinner, and there it was. The Hurom Juicer.
Damn.
Gorgeous with its Korean design and technology, here you have your own personal slow masticating juicer. The benefits of slow juicers definitely are ones to pay attention to. With traditional juicers, the blade spins at a much higher speed, therefore increasing the temperature and risk eliminating the important nutrients vital to your health. The pulp is much drier (you can throw your carrot and apple pulp in your carrot cake recipe – yes please), thus eliminating excessive waste. With the Hurom, it ‘crushes’ the produce to maximize juice output. This is similar to cold-pressed juices, however those juices are extracted by a hydraulic press through a very thick straining bag to catch any pulp bits. Slower juicing gives you much less foam that would promote oxidation (because you’d lose more nutrients as well) so why settle with a machine that would damage the good food you’re trying to provide for your body? And to top all of this off, the pieces come apart so easy and ALL of those parts are dishwasher safe.
Juicing has now become a staple in our daily lives, and juicing foods we never thought of using has just made this experience so fun. A girlfriend of mine just picked one up a couple of weeks back after we sent her and her fiancé home with a jar and they were sold. I’ve been seeing all of their delicious combinations that I’ll be sure to take note of when Mark and I need some inspiration!
Check out the link to Hurom in the source below, and keep an eye out. They have sales throughout the year, and they currently have one right now for 30% off!
